Consolidated Efforts to Champion Sustainable Manufacturing in Singapore
30 April 2009 – Pursuant to a clear goal for sustainable manufacturing in Singapore, SMa signed separate Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with two prominent partners – Singapore Environment Council (SEC) and Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech); leveraging on their respective fields of expertise, skills and technology to identify, develop and promote the adoption of sustainable manufacturing practices among local manufacturers.
This MOU signing ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel was witnessed by Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Education, Mr S Iswaran; Deputy Chief Executive of SPRING Singapore, Mr Ted Tan, and President of SMa, Mr Renny Yeo.
Senior Minister of State, Mr S. Iswaran for the Ministry of Trade & Industry and Education commended the three partners for the timely collaborations. Said Mr Iswaran, “Sustainable Manufacturing is the way forward to compete in the global market. This (programme) will help to maximise the competitiveness of manufacturers in Singapore, especially in the current challenging economic conditions.”
Also, the ceremony marked the launch of the Sustainable Manufacturing Programme. It aims to help increase manufacturers’ efficiency by reducing energy and water consumption, by-product waste and carbon footprint through eco-efficient improvements to their manufacturing systems and processes. This programme is also supported by SPRING Singapore.
A consortium of food manufacturers in Singapore has already committed themselves to this programme. Following the successful implementation of this pilot project, SMa, together with its partners and members, will explore similar executions with other sectors including electronics, precision engineering, chemicals and logistics.
